Special Presentation: RATES DEBATE - will it affect YOU ?
PA needs YOU …. See you at the AGM. Come and make your voice heard
RATES DEBATE: presentation will be by lawyer Georg Kahle, who will explain the legal framework
We have heard the contradictory reports on the new rating system
to be implemented in the City next year: that homeowners will be
affected only slightly, while other maintain that the system, which is
to be two- or multi-tiered, will be used to take from the comparatively
few "rich" to give to the multitudinous poor. Wherever the truth lies,
PA has in the past aided residents to deal with unfair rating. This
could only happen again if those with relevant knowledge will offer
their services. Read all about it at http://www.joburg.org.za/rates/index.stm

We don't allow it - please abide by the law - find out how to Stop illegal building in the suburb.
We have recently been affective in stopping illegal building on two important heritage properties in the suburb.
The Parktown & Westcliff
Heritage Trust have created a building register of all the noteworthy
properties in Parktown. Check out your property in the building_reqister. It will also tell you if your property is over 60 years old.
If it is, and you wish to do any alterations to the property (even to more recent additions) you must, by law,
have approval from the Provincal Heritage Resource Agency as well as
City Council planning permission. We have provided a check list to help residents navigate successfully through the process.
The City of Johannesburg has recently
designated a large part of Parktown to the east of Jan Smuts as an
"institutional node" in an attempt to support existing institutions.
They want to encourage development of bookstores, internet cafes, guest
houses, hotels, conference centres etc. They will not allow industrial
use or large scale retail. As more information comes to hand well
update you with it.
We are still awaiting further details from
the Transport Department. They have done a Heritage Impact Assessment
on the route, however, for some reason they completely missed including
Parktown in the report. We have asked for this to be rectified.
There has been a commitment to do a pollution and noise study. We are
yet to see the scope of this report.
