Illegal Buildings

Unfortunately there are residents in Parktown who build without having approval from the City Council.

As a response to a number of neighbours disadvantaged by such activity and to the Council’s lack of enforcement, we propose a new sub committee of the Parktown Association be established to enforce the laws against residents who break them. At the same time, this group will lobby the Council to take responsibility for the enforcement.  It is not acceptable that many properties are being destroyed and that this heritage is lost to us forever.  It is the responsibility of all property owners to abide by the law.

If you are subjected to building by neighbours you can take action:

  • Contact the Joint Plans Committee to report the activity
  • Ring the building inspector at the City Council - Mike Fakude 376 8669.

If the building work does not have approval by the City Council a notice will be served by the building inspector.  The property owner has 30 days to get their plans approved otherwise a demolition order will be issued. We recommend that you follow up with the building inspector in 30 days to check what is happening and to assure him that you still want a satisfactory resolution.

Neighbours do not have to put up with illegal building activity.  The Parktown Association supports all property owners in the quest to stop this activity.
