Building Register for Parktown

The Parktown & Westcliff Heritage Trust has done an audit of properties in Parktown. We're delighted to be able to provide this register to the community.

Use this register to determine if a house in which you are living or considering buying is listed as an important heritage property. Properties have been graded by the Trust and noted alongside the architect and original owner

Parktown Building Register

Grade

Description

AA

The highest category.  Buildings / properties / structures of outstanding historical and aesthetic significance.

A

Outstanding historical and/ or architectural / aesthetic value in relatively good condition.

B

Important architecturally with historical interest  and possibly landmark value. Landmarks and historic markers increase the value because they are part of people’s mental map of Johannesburg and are important to the character of Parktown.

C

Buildings of architectural value as good examples of a period or style,

usually with only minor and sympathetic later alterations and additions.

Some buildings which ought to be B have been put into this category because they have been badly altered.   A modern roofing material for instance can destroy the character much more radically than a well-designed extension.

D

Buildings which have little intrinsic merit but have elements which are important within a group e.g. Eckstein Compound Cottages or the Heritage Area.

n

New Building. Building less than 60 years old have considerable architectural / aesthetic / landmark value

z

Finally some buildings are protected by the zoning. These properties were granted rights subject to the retention of the existing house. This is an additional protection.

We have not been able to check all Map 3 schedules to ensure that the requirement was finally included in the rights. To indicate this uncertainty the z appears in brackets (z).
